Susunaga Weeraperuma (Author)

Susunaga Weeraperuma is a prolific author whose works range over a whole variety of subjects. He is an adept in the fields of both fiction and non-fiction.

But at the same time his fiction abounds with philosophical, psychological and religious insights that help the reader to unravel the mysteries of life. It is creative writing at its best.

The author’s Memoirs of an Oriental Philosopher is much more than a mere book of autobiographical essays of a spiritual seeker. It also consists of thought-provoking and at times hilarious episodes in his life in different countries. Although he was born in Sri Lanka, Weeraperuma has been spending the major part of his life in England, Australia, Switzerland and France. After taking a Master’s degree in Economics and Political Science at London University, he qualified as a Librarian and thereafter became a senior member of staff in the London-based British Library and the South Australian Parliamentary Library in Adelaide.

The 7 books on Krishnamurti that he wrote include 3 commentaries on Krishanmurti’s teachings and 2 extensive bibliographies. His celebrated collection of reminiscences titled J.Krishnamurti as I Knew Him has been translated into several languages. Weeraperuma’s Major Religions of India is a fascinating introduction to the four great religions that originated in India: Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism.

Weeraperuma is an eminent writer in the field of Buddhism. His faithful and masterly rendering of the Sutta Nipata, which is the oldest sacred text in Buddhist literature, resulted in the publication of three books. New Age Books in New Delhi brought out the three titles --- Nirvana the Highest HappinessThe First and Best Buddhist Teachings and Serenity Here and Now. As widely expected, he lucidly expounds the ancient wisdom in the idiom of our time.

A man of Asian origin, but a world citizen at heart, Susunaga Weeraperuma is a Gandhian pacifist striving for peace in a war-torn world.

A vegetarian solely out of compassion for animals, he is a yogi deriving his energy from breathing exercises --- Pranayama. He is a Doctor of Letters, a lifelong student, and an author with indifference to fame and fortune, who loves mental and manual work.

This many-sided personality is an ecologist who respects bounteous Mother Nature and admires her great beauty. He likes living and working in the rural quietness of the French medieval village called Les Arcs-sur-Argens where his time is devoted to Hatha Yoga, Meditation, Writing and Organic Gardening.
