The book covers evolution of information systems from the early 1960s to the present day. Major focus of the book is on understanding processes of information systems planning, development and implementation. It also discusses networking, the internet and e-commerce applications.

The book is organized into nineteen chapters. The first four chapters discuss the concepts and structure of information systems. Chapters five to eight are on specific information systems like TPS, DSS, ES and ERPS. Chapter nine discusses the role of computers in MIS. Chapters ten to fifteen deal with planning, designing and implementing information systems. Chapter sixteen is on social and legal aspects of computerization. Chapters seventeen and eighteen deal with networking and the internet. Chapter nineteen gives an introduction to E-commerce.
